We have tried about 10 different mineral sunscreens and this one is by far our favorite. I bought it for the first time about a month ago along with 4 other kids to give them all a ‘go’. This one has a very slight, nice smell, that we like and does not have a strong ‘sunscreen’ smell. It does come out of the tube quite fast and a little liquidy but it is not separated or clumpy. In a way the liquidy consistency is great because it makes application easier , especially with a 3 year old and a 15 month old that just want to run a way and play. Application is easy and you are not left with a crazy white film all over. We recent went on vacation for a week to lake anna and we in the water and in the sun all day for 4 days straight. We did reapply through out the day (not every 80min. ) and the kids did not have even a hint of sunburn. They are a little tanner but by no means did they ever get burned.
The zinc level is like t2 nuke explosion protection. Sure, it goes on thhhiicccc and white but it protects like no other. Also anything that will keep beautiful female redheads safe is a plus in my book.
I have tried several physical (usually zinc oxide-based) sunscreens and i prefer to use them instead of a chemical type, although there is no definitive proof that the chemical types are dangerous. Babo botanicals performs well, albeit at a premium price. It effectively screens the southern california sun while swimming outdoors. As with any zinc oxide-based sunscreen, it will leave a slight white residue on your skin if you use a sufficient amount. It applies easily, with the same consistency as hand or body lotion, unlike some other types i have tried, which are thicker. For those who don’t care which type of sunscreen they use, as long as it works, let price and consumer reports testing results be your guide.
I’ve been trying to find a safe sunscreen for my daughter every summer since she was a baby (she’s now 5). I’ve tried several and have fought my way through thick and hard to apply products, ones that left a white ghostly mask on her skin, ones with weird and unpleasant textures, and also ones that were so expensive i felt like i needed to conserve the product instead of applying liberally. I’ve found a few that are thinner and rub in more fully, but the ingredients are a bit of a compromise for me. This product’s ingredients are pretty darn good (including non-nano zinc), and i am happy enough with them that i have reordered after finishing the first tube. The product feels a bit thick at first, but spreads nicely and rubs in really well. It does not leave her looking ghostly. The texture is smooth and not at all unpleasant to feel on my skin. An added bonus is that due to the apple seed oil, it has a really nice light fruity scent that both my daughter and i appreciate. I also feel that the price is a bit more reasonable and don’t mind that it will probably take a few tubes to get us through the summer. Extra note: my daughter prefers to have this product applied on her whole body, including her face, instead of using the separate face stick.
We have had trouble finding a sunscreen that will work on my son. He has a number of allergies, including some weird ones. He has broken out in hives from some sunscreens. This one went on easily (despite the reviews) and worked well for us. I’m not sure if the people writing the bad reviews about how hard it is to rub in aren’t used to zinc based sunscreen, but it’s really not bad. I could see some white tint on my son’s skin but i didn’t try to fix it and it was only on his face when i didn’t rub too firmly. The limbs were easy to cover quickly and the sunscreen feels very light. Updated review 11/2014: we used this sunscreen all summer for my son. I continue to stock it in our home, but it is not water resistant, so i use vanicream for pool trips. I could see the babo clear zinc running off of him into the water.
I’ve used badger and burn out kids and compared to these, i like babo a bit more. This sunscreen goes on smooth, has very nice soft scent and does not leave you looking like a ghost. It did a great job protecting your skin from getting burned or tanned. I always try new products on myself before i use it on my kids and as a test, i put this sunscreen on part of my arm before going out to blueberry picking. The part of my arm that had the sunscreen was fine but the part where sunscreen wasn’t applied got burned. The other two products i mentioned earlier does a great job when it comes to sun protection but both will leave you looking like the white ghost and my older son who has allergies to many things on top of suffering from eczema, breaks out in rashes when i use badger product. I also cannot stand the scent of badger sunscreen. The only negative thing about babo is that it did leave my arm very dry so next time i’m going to moisturize well before applying this on. Overall, i like this product so i am going to get few more tubes to use on our upcoming vacation trip to the beach.
- IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR MAKING A DECISION – PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW!!!
- Good zinc oxide sunscreen
- Easy-to-apply zinc oxide-based sunscreen.
Edit: my original review is below. They now use a new formula that bunches up on the skin, leaving what might be compared to shavings that have to be brushed off the skin. Obviously there are some complaints, like ‘this sunscreen leaves a white residue’ or ‘it does not rub in well’ but that’s what you get when you buy a physical sunscreen. If you want no residue, buy a broad-spectrum chemical sunscreen and make sure to reapply every two hours (forgetting to reapply chemical sunscreens can result in more photodamage than if you did not wear any sunscreen). I too was worried about the white residue, but this turns clear in a few hours, and is great for oily skin. By that point i could hardly notice i was wearing it. Zinc oxide is also antibacterial, which means you may be able to avoid other skin products by application of the sunscreen. If you are constantly in the sun, you may need to reapply throughout the day, which will keep you skin white for longer. However, this is to be expected.
Well it gets good scores from the environmental working group’s website for not having harmful chemicals and offering good protection from the sun so is it a good sunscreen: yes. However the claim that it ‘goes on clear’ is not true. There are other ‘natural’ sun blocks that also have no or very few harmful chemicals and offer excellent uv protection which are also based on zinc oxide but they are less expensive than this kind. I thought this one would be better so i paid a higher price to avoid the white residue which is very hard to rub in or rub off. Unfortunately this one too leaves a lot of difficult to remove white stuff all over your face. Too bad it seems all zinc oxide based sun blocks are very difficult to rub in without leaving white stuff all over your face.
I go to the lake every summer (a lot) and my skin bakes in the sun. No worries with this sunscreen. I did my research and found this one to be the safest. I am extremely sensitive to a multitude of substances especially chemicals and even natural plants but i have not had any problem with babo.
I’ve done a lot of research and testing when it comes to sunscreen. The research is done on the ewg website, and the testing is done by blowing a lot of money trying different products and never being happy with them. This is the first sunscreen that i’m happy with. Don’t listen to any of these other reviews that say it doesn’t. Yes, it comes out of the bottle white, and when you first put it on your skin it’s white. Then, if you just rub for 5 seconds, it becomes clear. Most sunscreens take a minute of rubbing and it’s still not clear. This takes 5 seconds and it’s clear. I think the secret must be the grape juice, which is oddly enough the first ingredient. Something about grape juice makes zinc oxide rub in clear. Wonder who came up with that idea. You will never find a zinc oxide sunscreen that goes on immediately clear like lotion. It will always take a bit of rubbing.
I recently re-purchased this item that has been a go-to in my daily routine, and also received a bottle like many others have seen with the liquidy almost watery consistency. It had barely any scent, and was not as effective in blocking the uva/ uvb rays as i was used to. I ended up contacting babo botanicals directly asking if they had changed the formula. This was the response i received:’yes we recently change the formula of our spf 30 clear zinc sunscreen lotion. We enhanced it to be 80 minutes water/sweat resistant compare to the older formula. We have are using more clear zinc in compare to regular white zinc which cause the white clay consistency in our old formula. Rest assured that you still get the same amount of protection from the sun’s harmful uva & uvb rays. ‘after describing the water like consistency that i and other on amazon had received, they responded with the following:’i will gladly inform our product development team to look into this. But i believe the reviews that you are seeing is for a bad batch that we had an issue with last summer where the product was separating and causing it to be water-like consistency, this was also for the fragrance free sunscreen with a specific batch number. This has been resolved and we had launched a new formula this year.
