I kept getting a sunburn despite applying spf 50 with other sun screens, when i used this one i was going paddle boarding and didn’t want to get wet because i was afraid of the sunscreen washing off and getting another burn. Well i fell in a few times and the sunscreen still worked, no sunburn after 3hrs exposure.
Went on a cruise to mexico, belize and roatan. I am very fair with red hair and live in a state that is very cold this time of year. I was very concerned about burning on my trip. I never burned and was in the sun a lot everyday. I used it snorkeling, kayaking, on the beach, and biking. Love the scent and not at all greasy. I put it on in the morning and never reapplied. This is now the only sunscreen i will use.
I’m not a huge fan of the sunscreen. I got it because we were going snorkeling at some protected reefs, and i wanted to do the right thing nature-wise. I am a pale redhead, and i burn easily. This sunscreen worked moderately well, reapplying about every hour and a half. My biggest complaint is that after applying the sunscreen, i noticed i had little balls of white cream on my skin, and where that happened, i got burned. I’ve never had this happen with any other sunscreen before, and i will go back to the brand that i’ve been using for years.
The scent is very nice but i can’t use it on my face. It makes my eyes water and burn. I thought it was an allergy to something else and i tried it again the next day, same thing – watery eyes and a burning feeling. And no, i didn’t get it in my eyes. After washing it off my face it was fine. I can use it for my legs but have to use neutrogena on the face. Same issue when my husband tried it, burning eyes.
It’s hard to find vegan sunscreen that isn’t a spray. I’ve tried different sprays (including the spray version of this brand) and they tend to irritate my eyes. I’m a cyclist, so i need something that lasts and can hold up to sweat. This sunscreen fits the bill. I burn easily, so i would notice if this wasn’t working. In fact, i went out without gloves a few weeks back and forgot to put sunscreen on my hands. I was only out for 90 minutes and my hands got burnt pretty baldly- to the point that they peeled later. So yes, i can confidently say that this product is working. It goes on easily without feeling greasy. Your skin will look a little shiny, but nothing extreme.
My husband is a red head so or course he is super light skinned and always gets burned at the beach. This weekend thanks to sun bum he was the only one that didn’t get burned except a small part of his legs where we used a different brand thinking he wouldn’t need as much there. Everyone else was super impressed with how well this worked. We will never waste money on another brand again. This stuff works and smells amazing.
This stuff doesn’t go on feeling greasy like so many others and i haven’t burned after applying. I’m normally not out for more than six hours or so, but do live in a very hot and humid part of the country; sweat plays a factor. It’s got a slight odor (i like it), but it might be wise to wash the oils off our hands before handling lures/baits. If you just hang out on a beach or in the yard after tanning don’t worry about, you’ll smell great.
I live in southern california where the heat and the sun really do a number on your skin. It’s really difficult to find a good sunblock that isn’t greasy and doesn’t run and burn your eyes after being in the water, but i found it with thisi have sensitive skin and a serious annoyance with greasy sunblock. It seems the higher the spf, the greasier it is but this sun bum spf doesn’t leave me using baby wipes after application and it also doesn’t cause a massive break out which is a huge plus for me. Its also great for the kids who are in the water all day and usually have melt downs from sunblock running and burning their eyes. Definitely recommend for anyone with sensitive skin, no matter what age range.

Originally found this product in a surf shop because i wear sunscreen everyday–face and body. When you live in hawaii, you gotta use sunscreen. Tried many brands including high-end ones, but liked that the sun bum was 50+ spf and that it just glides on nicely, probably because of the moisturizer.
My husband is very fair skinned and is always burning. (he’s a red head green eyed freckled irish man). I bought this because we were going to hawaii and i wanted a reef safe sunscreen. Let me tell you this is a game changer. We were in hawaii for two weeks and he did not burn at all. We have tried hundreds of other sunscreens and this is by far the best. I am hoping i can get it auto shipped for the summer.
This is my favorite sunscreen. It is lightweight and blends into my skin easily. I don’t feel greasy after application. This bottle is also big enough to last a while (ie. I used it every day on my week long vacation on my whole body and still had more than half left over). It has a light coconut/tropical smell that is refreshing. I really like the company, too. This product is reef friendly and is vegan. The company does good in communities, too. For example, they installed shaded areas/canopies in children’s playgrounds so they can play during they day without harsh uv rays or sunscreen.
I absolutely love this sunscreen. I am very pale and burn easily, so i have to put a ton on before i go out in the sun. It goes on smooth and smells amazing. It’s perfect coverage without feeling like you’re wearing any. I love putting it on, even if i’m not going out in the sun because i love the smell of it. You will not be disappointed with this product. I leave one in my purse and in my house so i always have it with me. I have never been this excited about sunscreen.
I am a pale, pale lady with majorly sensitive skin who has used probably every sunscreen product on the planet, because i love the outdoors. I’ve done cheap (target, neutrogena, coppertone, bullfrog), expensive (shiseido, la roche-posay, md solarsciences, obagi), chemical sunscreens, physical sunscreens, natural/organic sunscreens, gels, creams, sprays- you name it. Before i found this my go-to had been banana boat kid spf 50, which works really well, but leaves some major white residue on your skin and everywhere else. But it worked, so i stuck with it. I bought it for a trip to mexico and managed, for the first time in my life, to come back from vacation without a burn. It worked all day from one application during a completely cloudless week on the beach, even after multiple trips into the ocean. It smells pretty decent (though my one wish would be that there was a fragrance-free option). It’s not too greasy and there is very minimal skin to clothing transfer. And the best part- i didn’t end up looking like i was signing up for kabuki theater. It’s pretty hard when you’re super-pale to find a sunscreen that you can apply and forget about all day, not having to constantly worry about reapplication, trying to find a shady spot, or looking like you’ve just brushed white paint all over your body. I think i just found a secret weapon.
Pleasant light coconut kind of smell. Leaves my skin quite moisturized. This stuff was great for my trip to the parks in orlando. Spent the entire day in the sun, usually reapplied around midday and got no burns. I was sweating the entire day and i was still protected. I am so pale i joke that i might become transparent. No tan for me this tripi read somewhere that you are supposed to use 1 once of lotion for your whole body to adequately protect you from the sun. So with that in mind, you really need to lather it on (any sunscreen, not just this one).
I purchased this because i wanted a sunscreen as well as a moisturizer and this fits the bill. I read one recommendation the criticized the smell but i like the fragrance. Its spf is 50 and it really prevents sun damage. I had never heard of sun bum but i have used it all summer and would definitely buy it again. It does what it says it is going to do. Not every product sold can say that.
My husband is very light skinned and burns very easily. Have struggled to find a product that works on him. I purchased the spf 70 for a day at the beach. He spent 4+ and reapplied as directed. He spent a lot of that time reading under and umbrella. Normally, this would be enough to make him lobster red and miserably burned- not with sun bum. We are so happy we purchased this. He’s never been able to lay out and read and he loved being able to enjoy the beach.
I have tried many different sunscreens and there is a ton of variance in how they feel and how they perform. For almost 10 years, i’ve tried to find a truly good option on the ‘natural side’ (avoids the highly questionable chemical compounds) of the spectrum. Most them don’t cut it for me, although a few do pretty well. This was until i tried the sum bum 50. It is hands down the best sunscreen i have ever used and i’ve been using it for about 8 months, including all of the summer months. It works exceptionally well for a very long period. Whether i’m sweating for 5 hours on a bike ride or swimming with my kids, i’ve never been close to burning when i’ve had this on. How does it feel when it’s on?. I’d rank it as exceptional in that regard too. I don’t care what any bottle says, there is always some degree of feeling greasy when you use sunscreen but this one feels better than any other i’ve tried and i don’t mind putting it on.
Confessions, haven;t opened this one yet as it’s travel size for the long awaited venice and athens trip in sept/october, but can proudly say it’s sister product in moisturizing spray form. Is now my go to product, scottish/irish skin burns easily even heavily coated in standard coppertone, banana boat etc. Spray sun bum on shoulders, arms & face for top down bliss in the sl 550 convertible and no burn, no oww.
I love the smell of this lotion. Also it’s a little bit thicker than most which i prefer as it actually feels like i’m coated and protected with a nice layer of sunscreen verse the sunscreens out there that have the consistency of water almost. Also love that this brand is vegan and cruelty free and doesn’t contain a ton of harmful ingredients. And as a floridian i’m sopporting a homegrown company when i use sun bum.
Pros: – seems to work very well – when i reapply properly i haven’t gotten burned. – broad spectrum – i like the banana-ish smell – blends in well with skin – no white cast – vegan and cruelty-free – bottle design looks nice – not drying – hydratingpossible cons:- i’ve heard some dermatologists worry about fragrance in sunscreens being irritating. However, this fragrance has not irritated my skin and i’ve recommended this sunscreen to several people. Hasn’t irritated their skin either. If you have sensitive skin though, maybe try applying on a small spot first. – has avobenzone for uva protection, which is good for uva protection but by itself degrades somewhat quickly over time when exposed to light. However, this sunscreen also has octocrylene, which is supposed to stabilize avobenzone to some degree. In the usa, we have no rating for uva protection like we have for uvb protection (spf). Uvb is what causes a sun burn, but uva can still cause bad skin damage. However, because this sunscreen is labelled as broad spectrum and because it has octocrylene with avobenzone, it’s probably about as good uva protection as you’ll get in american chemical sunscreens.
I burn easily and quickly feel when sunblock wears off. I’ve tried tons of brands over the years and have claimed a favorite from time to time – but this one beats them all for me. Rubs in nicely, smells lovely. It works on my fair/freckly/easily sunburned skin. I didn’t feel the need to reapply every 30 minutes or immediately after even a quick dip in the water (i’m obsessive though, so the max i went was probably 70-90 minutes between applications). There are many good things about their ingredients, and some not so great, according to some research/publications. I definitely have some hippy tendencies/preferences, but when the choice is between ‘ingredients that, in some super large quantities, were once indicated to cause some possible health issues’ vs. ‘sunburn does certainly cause skin cancer and pain’ (and wrinkles) – after too many times trusting sunblocks (both $$$ all natural and cheap drugstore brands) that i end up having to reapply every 30 minutes and still getting burned – i’ll still pick this block. Also, regarding the ‘anything over spf 30 is unnecessary’ – tell that to my skin, which barely even recognizes spf 30. I’ll take the extra coverage, thank you.
I can safely say that this sunscreen has way exceeded my expectations. Normally i wouldn’t write a rave review about such a product, but i am quite impressed for the following reasons:scent- i was a bit skeptical at first about as to whether or not i’d like the scent just from reading its description. The best descriptor is a combination of banana and coconut. Might sound gross, but the scent gets an a+ in my book. This is saying quite a bit coming from someone like me, who is generally sensitive to certain fragrances. Also, the smell isn’t too overpowering – it is definitely noticeable, but in a good way. It creates a nice, summery vibe, while not having a bad chemical smell. It does have a bit of a ‘lotion-like’ feel (duh) when putting it on, compared to some of the ‘dry’ sunscreens out there. Nonetheless, it rubs in quite well, and the feel isn’t even noticeable when fully rubbed in.
I am allergic to aloe and gluten, and do my best to purchase cruelty free and vegan products. There’s a faint fragrance of banana and coconut in it (but no actual banana; i’m allergic and i’d get hives if it were), but it’s not overpowering at all and goes away fairly quickly. I get migraines from fragrance typically, but not this one. It’s also decently hydrating for a sunscreen, and i don’t get a white cast like i do with others. I’m very pale, so i can’t say for certain if this will be friendly on darker skin tones, but i’m a tentative yes on that. For the quality and price, it’s worth trying.
This is the best sunblock we’ve ever used. If you want to be completely protected and not get any tan at all, this product is for you. We would put it on before going outside. Then, we would usually spend close to an hour at in the ocean. Then go to the pool and spend a couple of hours in the pool. Most of the time we didn’t re-applied any sunblock and we got obsolutely no tan at all. Once we ran out, we used banna boat and we became a little brown towards the end of our trip.
This appears to work as advertised and smells good if you like coconut scent. However, i had an issue with it running into my eyes causing my eyes to water badly and sting mildly for about two hours. I have gotten a little sunscreen in my eyes before and never had such a strong reaction. I would not put this near my kids eyes but would still use it for other areas.
I don’t have enough good things to say about this sunscreen. I bought it at target one day because i was out of sunscreen, it was around $14 which is a little steep but since amazon users rated it almost 5 stars i figured i’d try it. This sunscreen with change your life. It’s the best smelling sunscreen i’ve ever smelled like coconuts, hawaii and tropical forest in a bottle. The smell isn’t even the best part, it’s vegan. No animal testing, it’s hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. So, not only does it not test on animals it doesn’t have all the horrible chemicals in it and it still works 100% better than big name brands out there. It goes on silky (not oily) and has a matte finish.
I have been a neutrogena user for various products, sunscreen to cleansers and i have been considering a stronger spf70 as my legs have become dark logs after 2 hours of exposure with sp70 and i feel a burning sensation which isn’t good. After switching to sun bum, woah. Better and lathers everywhere so easily during application. Recently finished up a 5 hour 60mile road bike excursion and no burning sensations what so ever or nor more skin darkening. My only con of this product compared to neutrogena sunscreens when washing away the suncreen, it is really hard to scrub it all offsouthern california sun.
Like all sun screen, you must reapply sunbum after you’ve been outside for a while, that’s basic knowledge. I especially like sun bum for my family because i think it covers well, has relatively clean ingredients, smells great and does what it’s supposed to. When worn outside but not in the water i feel like it provides coverage for longer than the stated 80 minutes. When playing at the pool or beach reapplication after 80 minutes is needed (and smart to do).
We have 4 people in our family. Two of them have fair skin and 1 of them had melanoma. We pay very close attention to skin care in the summer, escpecially since we spend most days in a pool, on a boat, or at the beach. Our daughter is the fairest skinned and we struggle every year with sunburns with her. We’ve tried every product out there and some are very good, but until now, none have been great. We started using sun bum products this summer based on a friends recommendation. We are all in on sun bum products now. All of them are fantastic products.
I burn easily, and for my honeymoon, we traveled to the caribbean. I spent a lot of time trying to find a moisturizing, paraben-free, broad-spectrum sunscreen that would provide maximum protection for an affordable price, and i found it. During our week-long trip, i didn’t get burnt – not even a little. The lotion spread well, was easily absorbed in my skin with no greasy residue, and left my skin noticeably softer after application. It has a slight but pleasant smell that did not linger after putting it on, and it even worked great under makeup. When in the sun, i reapplied about every two hours, more often if i sweated heavily or spent much time in the water. I strongly recommend this product.
I used to hawaiian tropic ozone spf 70 for years until they stupidly stopped making it. Tried all kinds of potions, cheap and high end and they all totally failed me. Read reviews on this and said wth, lets try it. Used it on a vacation to fl last week and it worked like a champ, just like the old ht stuff. Was in fresh and salt water off and on all day. Applied every two hours and am not sunburt at all, and thats saying a lot from a red head with super fare skin. Goes on really smooth, not all goopy like, and coverage is great. A family of four used half a bottle in a week, using daily. Smells pretty damn good too :).
Discovered it in hawaii and brought it home to california. Great absorbing qualities and nice tropical scent.
I am very light skinned and i sunburn easily. My skin is pretty sensitive to the sun. I was using coppertone and would still get burnt, even with reapplying. I have used this sunscreen twice now and the times i have used it, i did reapply but i still got burnt but not as bad. So i guess that is sort of an improvement. I would not blame this sunscreen though as much as i would just blame it on my fair skin haha. I have used so many sunscreens and none of them fully work it seems like. I did notice that i seemed to tan better using this instead of just burning so that is nice. Something i do love about this sunscreen is the fact that it smells so good and that it really is non-greasy. It barely feels like i have anything on which is great.
Okay so, all i can i say is that this stuff is a great sunscreen. It smells great (my youngest son says it smells like summer 🙂 like banana’s), doesn’t leave a white film, doesn’t sting mine or my families eyes, no rashes, no splotchy stuff. I feel protected and don’t come home sun burned. My skin feels great and looks great. Most of the sun screens that are 30 or more spf that i have tried. I end up with this white filmy, residue stuff that i can’t rub in and that annoying factor is gone with this. It rubs in great and protects great. I have sensitive skin as does my husband. Heavy lotions and sunscreens leaves my skin feeling greasy all day and leaves behind clogged pores.
i have yet to use it outside, but as a black woman i’m glad that this sunscreen doesn’t give off an ashy after-affect.
My husband and i went to hawaii on our honeymoon. I am a pasty white girl who freckles and burns before ultimately having a tan. I hate sunscreen that isn’t a spray (normally). I have very sensitive skin that hates most sunscreens. Easy to apply, easy to rub in and doesn’t feel greasy, and i actually really like the smell. My husband, who tans in 5 minutes, also really liked it. We would apply consistently during the days at the beach and neither of us burned at all. This ain’t a sunscreen you can just rub and go. It needs to settle into your skin, and you need to reapply every 2 hours.
